Road Legal Electric Bikes

By definition in Australia, an electric bike cannot exceed 250w* of rated output, and must be operated by a pedelec system (not a throttle), with a speed limitation of 25km/h. Any bike fitted with more powerful motors cannot be legally ridden on the road. Understand the Victorian law further.

MOTOR TYPES

There are 2 different types of motors available to turn your bike into an electric bike. The HUB Motor (in the wheel), and the MID-DRIVE Motor (drives the front chainring). See more information about the different electric bike motors. NOTE: The kits in this category are above the road-legal 250w* limit, and are only legal to use on private property. Please read and understand electric bike regulations before purchasing. *NOTE – NSW Only: On 24 February 2023, the NSW Government legislated to allow motors up to a “maximum continued rated power of 500W” with pedal assist for use in permitted public places. All other states and territories retain the 250W limit.
