Choosing the ideal battery is a very personal thing. Just as we are all different, we ride different routes, on different bikes and we all have different requirements from a battery. It’s important to be realistic and think about how you will be using your e-bike. While no-one wants to be caught short with a lower battery capacity than is needed for their regular trips, it is also not ideal to be riding around carrying a bigger battery if it’s significantly larger than needed.
As well as the size of the battery, to suit your needs, it’s important to consider the quality, safety and longevity of an e-bike battery. In a world where batteries are becoming used more and more widely, recycling becomes more important too. As a battery seller, we are very mindful of the resources used in the production of batteries and the need to recover those resources as much as possible.
We promote recycling batteries through an EPA accredited company such as MRI Pty Ltd (with current recycling technologies, 98% of the contents of a Lithium battery can avoid landfill). The cost of battery recycling is approximately $20 for our batteries. Alternatively, you may be able to take your old battery to Officeworks, Battery World or somewhere else that accepts them for recycling or safe disposal.
In addition to the ‘amp hour’ storage capacity of your battery, the distance you will get depends on a lot of factors, such as how much you are pedalling, how hilly the terrain is, prevailing wind, how many stop/starts you are doing, the weight of you and the bike, the pressure in your tyres, the age of the battery, and the temperature of the battery. To get the most distance, you should pedal as much as possible, keep your tyres at manufacturer recommended pressures, keep the battery as temperate as possible, avoid stop-starts, and keep your bike well serviced to avoid excess resistance.
A 36v 10ah battery should give 360 watt hours, and if you are riding at 200watts, this will last for under 2 hours. Keep in mind there will also be some left-over power that the battery won’t use, to preserve itself. You might want to presume about 1.5 hours of riding without pedalling. If we assume we are applying an equal amount of power as the motor through pedalling, we can double this, which should get the average person about 3 hours per charge, or somewhere around 60kms at an average speed of 20km/h (on the flat).
The best way to ensure a long battery life is to properly care for it. Many suppliers don’t provide any instructions, or people don’t read them. We’ve encountered lithium batteries which have been left on to “trickle charge” – not desirable! Or putting the charger on a timer, to run for 2 hours per day… this is like a kick in the guts to an already full pack. Or the opposite, being left for extended periods like 2 years, without a single charge.
All batteries are not created equal. There are several key factors which influence the performance and long lifespan on an e-bike battery. The quality of the cells is important. Rev Bikes Batteries use the highest quality cells from Sanyo, LG, Panasonic and Samsung.
